Legendary Bollywood actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar passed away at the age of 87 late Thursday (April 3) night at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai. The iconic star, best remembered for his deeply patriotic films, had been admitted following heart-related complications.

According to the hospital's medical certificate, the secondary cause of death was “decompensated liver cirrhosis.”

Born as Harikrishan Giri Goswami in present-day Pakistan, Manoj Kumar rose to become one of Indian cinema’s most revered figures. Popularly known as Bharat Kumar for his memorable portrayals of nationalistic characters, Kumar carved a unique niche in Hindi cinema during an era largely dominated by romance and family dramas.

His filmography includes timeless classics such as Shaheed (1965), Upkar (1967), Purab Aur Paschim (1970), and Kranti (1981)—films that not only entertained but also stirred a sense of patriotism in audiences across generations. His impactful work earned him the Padma Shri in 1992, and in 2015, he was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest recognition in cinema.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the legendary actor in a social media post on Friday morning.

Sharing old photographs of Manoj Kumar, he wrote, “Deeply saddened by the passing of legendary actor and filmmaker Shri Manoj Kumar Ji. He was an icon of Indian cinema, who was particularly remembered for his patriotic zeal, which was also reflected in his films. Manoj Ji’s works ignited a spirit of national pride and will continue to inspire generations. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this hour of grief. Om Shanti.”

Kumar’s career spanned acting, directing, and producing, with a reputation for meaningful cinema rooted in cultural pride and national values.

His films often dealt with themes of unity, sacrifice, and resilience, reflecting post-independence India's social ethos. Despite his fame, Kumar remained grounded, often collaborating closely with his wife, Shashi Kiran, who supported him behind the scenes.

News of his demise triggered an outpouring of grief from across the film industry. Beyond cinema, Manoj Kumar's legacy lies in how he used the medium to channel a vision of India rooted in dignity, integrity, and hope.

As the nation mourns his loss, his body of work continues to inspire and resonate with audiences young and old.
