The West Bengal Police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against actor-turned-Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) leader Mithun Chakraborty, alleging that he delivered a provocative speech during a BJP event in Kolkata's Salt Lake area on October 27.
The complainant alleged that the actor-turned-politician made the statement at a BJP organisational meeting in Kolkata, in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
On Wednesday (November 6), the FIR was filed at Bowbazar police station in central Kolkata, accusing the Dadasaheb Phalke awardee of making statements that can provoke violence and tension.
During his speech on October 27, Mithun Chakraborty, addressing Amit Shah, made pointed remarks referencing an earlier statement by Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Humayun Kabir.
Chakraborty said, “I am saying this in front of the Home Minister—I will do whatever I need to do,” hinting at deeper meaning behind his words. He cited Kabir’s past controversial remark about the religious composition of voters, where Kabir had allegedly said, “70 percent are Muslims, 30 percent are Hindus; I will cut it and float it in the Bhagirathi.”
Chakraborty noted that he expected Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to address Kabir’s statement, but when she remained silent, he decided to respond.
He said, “I am not the Chief Minister, but I will say this: the day will come when I will cut you (Muslims) but not float anything in Bhagirathi River, because the river is sacred to us. The Bhagirathi River is our mother. I will cut you and throw you at your own land.”
Reflecting on his own political journey, he remarked, “This is not actor Mithun Chakraborty speaking, but the Mithun of 1968, a 28-year-old who engaged in intense politics, who understands the stakes. I want to stand with you, and I want courage from you. You must come forward, fearlessly.”
Chakraborty also said the "masnad" (throne) of West Bengal would belong to the BJP after the 2026 assembly elections. He vowed to do whatever it takes to achieve the goal. “In 2026, the masnad will be ours, and we will do everything to achieve the goal,” he said.
The BJP programme took place at the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre in the Salt Lake area. The party programme in North 24 Parganas was organised to kick off the West Bengal leg of the BJP's membership drive.
"We have started an investigation into the case," a senior Bidhannagar police officer was quoted as saying by PTI.
According to BJP state president and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar, the FIR is a result of "vendetta politics".
“There is nothing provocative in his speech. These are nothing but attempts to intimidate him by using police as a political tool,” Majumdar said, reported PTI.
