SAHMAT Commemorates Safdar Hashmi with Music, Art and Solidarity

The Punjab-based group Ferro Fluid performed at Surjeet Bhavan on Wednesday.

Sahmat (Safdar Hashmi Memorial Trust) on Wednesday (January 1), commemorated the 36th anniversary of Safdar Hashmi's death with renewed vigour at Surjeet Bhavan, ITO, New Delhi.

Established in Safdar Hashmi’s memory, Sahmat continues to be a symbol of cultural resistance, advocating for secularism, democracy, and progressive ideals.

This year’s indoor event, held to shield participants from the winter cold, became a vibrant fusion of art, music, and thought. The event was a reminder of the enduring spirit of cultural and political solidarity.

Surjeet Bhavan, adorned with poignant banners and artwork, transformed into a dynamic space for remembrance and solidarity. The gathering revitalized the long-standing tradition of Sahmat’s January 1st commemorations, celebrating the enduring power of collective resistance through cultural expression.

The event's theme, "Singing in the Dark Times," set a resonant tone for moving musical performances.

The Punjab-based group Ferro Fluid enchanted the audience with soulful renditions of works by Kabir and Bulleh Shah. Anya, a student from Delhi University, moved hearts with songs by the revolutionary Pakistani poet Habib Jalib.

Renowned singers such as Madan Gopal Singh and Rekha Bhardwaj also graced the stage.

An exhibition showcased prints and photographs highlighting late CPI(M) general secretary, Sitaram Yechury’s life and his connection with Sahmat, reflecting the trust's commitment to nurturing critical culture in an evolving political landscape.

The commemoration served as a powerful testament to the resilience of cultural resistance amid adversity.

In light of the devastation in Gaza and the ongoing struggles of marginalized communities in India and worldwide, the gathering stood as a beacon of hope, reminding everyone of the enduring strength of the human spirit and the relentless pursuit of justice and equality.
