The Supreme Court on Monday (January 3) described the January 29 stampede at the ongoing Maha Kumbh as an "unfortunate" incident but directed a petitioner seeking its intervention to approach the Allahabad High Court instead.
In response to a PIL filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari, Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, leading a two-judge bench, remarked, “It’s an unfortunate incident, something which is of concern. But go to the High Court. There is already a judicial commission which has been constituted,” reported The Indian Express.
Representing the Uttar Pradesh government, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi informed the court that an inquiry commission had been established and that a similar petition was already pending before the High Court.
The PIL alleged negligence on the part of the state and called for action against officials responsible for the mishap.
It cited administrative failures and lapses, urging the establishment of a dedicated "devotee aid cell" to assist pilgrims at the Kumbh Mela.
Highlighting the recurring nature of such stampedes, the plea further sought directives for all states to formulate policies aimed at improving crowd management and preventing similar tragedies in the future.
