The Rajasthan High Court on Tuesday (August 13), granted 83-year-old self-styled godman Asaram Bapu a 7-day parole to undergo treatment at an Ayurvedic hospital in Maharashtra under police custody.

The Jodhpur bench of the high court, comprising Justices PS Bhati and Munnuri Laxman, ruled that the self-styled godman would receive treatment at a hospital under police supervision for the duration of the parole, news agency PTI reported

Asaram, who is serving a life sentence for raping a minor, was arrested in Indore in September 2013 and was convicted by a special POCSO court in 2018. He was admitted to AIIMS Jodhpur for two days after developing a heart-related ailment and has been receiving treatment there.

Asaram reportedly insisted on Ayurvedic treatment and requested the court to grant him permission for treatment specifically at the Madhavbaug Multidisciplinary Cardiac Care Clinic and Hospital in Pune.

Previously, Asaram's pleas for a suspension of his sentence on health grounds had been rejected by both the high court and the Supreme Court.

In January 2023, a Gujarat court convicted Asaram in a decade-old sexual assault case involving a female disciple and sentenced him to life imprisonment. The victim, a woman from Surat, had accused Asaram of repeatedly raping her at his ashram in 2013.
