A Kolkata court on Friday (December 13) granted bail to Sandip Ghosh, former Principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, along with Abhijit Mondal, the former officer in charge of the Tala police station, in connection with the rape and murder of a resident doctor that occurred in August this year.

The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) of the Sealdah court granted bail to Sandip Ghosh and Abhijit Mondal after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) failed to file a chargesheet within the stipulated 90-day period.

The court granted bail to both Sandip Ghosh and Abhijit Mondal on a surety bond of Rs 2,000 each, with the condition that they must appear before the CBI whenever summoned by the agency.

Following the verdict, Abhijit Mondal is expected to be released from custody. However, Ghosh will continue to remain in jail due to his involvement in a separate case related to alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Ghosh was arrested by the CBI on September 2 following an August 23 directive from the Calcutta High Court, which ordered an investigation into financial mismanagement and alleged tampering with critical evidence related to the rape case.

The directive came after Akhtar Ali, the former Deputy Superintendent of RG Kar Hospital, petitioned the court, accusing Ghosh of committing serious illegalities during his tenure as Principal.

Ghosh subsequently challenged the High Court's order in the Supreme Court, but his appeal was dismissed on September 6.

The rape and murder case sparked nationwide outrage and protests, with Ghosh facing widespread criticism, particularly after allegations of victim-blaming surfaced.

He resigned from his position amid the controversy but was controversially appointed as Principal of another medical college shortly afterward.

This decision triggered public backlash and drew sharp criticism from the Calcutta High Court, which denounced the move as a "reward" for his resignation, underscoring its disapproval of the State's handling of the matter.
