The Supreme Court has rejected a petition challenging the Karnataka high court's decision to grant bail to Mohan Nayak N, who is accused in the 2017 murder case of journalist Gauri Lankesh in Bengaluru.
A bench comprising Justices Bela M. Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma observed that the accused had been in custody since July 18, 2018, and had cooperated with the trial court throughout the proceedings. They also noted that 100 witnesses remain to be examined in the case.
The Bench was reviewing appeals challenging the Karnataka high court's decision to grant bail to Mohan Nayak, one of the individuals accused in the Gauri Lankesh murder case.
In December 2023, the Karnataka High Court granted bail to Nayak, citing the possibility of a prolonged trial.
The Supreme Court in its order said, "It is not disputed that the Respondent No.2 – Sri Mohan Nayak N ... has cooperated with the trial court in proceeding further with the trial and has not sought any adjournment. He is in custody since 18-7-2018. Under the circumstances, we are not inclined to interfere with the impugned orders passed by the High Court ... The Special Leave Petitions are dismissed accordingly," Bar and Bench reported.
In January, the Supreme Court had requested responses from both the Karnataka government and Nayak regarding the plea submitted by Kavitha Lankesh, the sister of the deceased. On Tuesday, the Court also dismissed the State government's appeal.
Gauri Lankesh was murdered on September 5, 2017, outside her house in Bengaluru. The main accused in her murder, Amol Kale, is a former leader of the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti.
Lankesh, the editor and publisher of a Bangalore weekly, the Gauri Lankesh Patrike, was an outspoken left-wing journalist.
