A PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act) court in Kolkata, granted bail to former West Bengal minister Jyoti Priya Mallick on Wednesday (January 15), in connection with an alleged ration distribution scam being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Mallick was released on a personal bond of Rs 50 lakh, news agency PTI reported.

Mallick, who served as the Food and Supplies Minister from 2011 to 2021, was arrested on October 27, 2023, at his residence in Salt Lake by the ED during its probe into the alleged scam.

Special judge Prasanta Mukhopadhyay of the PMLA court at Bankshall Court approved Mallick’s bail, requiring him to provide a personal bond of Rs 50 lakh and two sureties of Rs 25,000 each.

During the bail hearing, Mallick’s lawyers argued that he had been in detention for an extended period and that the trial was unlikely to begin soon.

However, the Enforcement Directorate opposed the bail, citing Mallick’s involvement as a key accused in the case.

At the time of his arrest, Mallick held the Forest portfolio in the West Bengal cabinet.
