A Delhi court on Friday (March 7) granted 15 days of interim bail to Shahrukh Pathan, who was captured on camera pointing a pistol at a police constable during the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots.
Pathan, in judicial custody since March 3, 2020, had sought interim bail to visit his ailing father, who has been hospitalized with multiple medical conditions.
Granting bail, Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai of Karkardooma Court observed that the presence of the accused was necessary to take care of his father and arrange financial support for the family. The court directed Pathan to furnish a personal bond of Rs 20,000 with one surety of the same amount.
Certain conditions were imposed on his release. He must keep his mobile phone active, refrain from contacting witnesses or co-accused, and report to Jafrabad police station every alternate day between 10 AM and 11 AM.
Special Public Prosecutor Anuj Handa opposed the bail plea, citing the seriousness of the charges and the risk of the accused evading justice. Pathan has been booked under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including rioting, unlawful assembly, and attempted murder, along with provisions of the Arms Act.
After the 2020 incident, Pathan had fled Delhi but was later arrested by the Delhi Police Crime Branch in Shamli, Uttar Pradesh.
