The Delhi High Court on Monday (April 22) dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), filed by a law student, seeking “extraordinary interim bail” for Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal with a cost of ₹75,000.
The PIL was filed on the ground that Delhi CM’s safety is in danger as he is confined with hardcore criminals.
Rejecting the plea, the High Court told the fourth year law student, "He (Kejriwal) is in custody by judicial order. The matter is pending in Supreme Court. Who are we to advise him? Who are you? You have some exaggerated opinion of yourself."
A division bench, led by acting Chief Justice Manmohan and including Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora, dismissed the petition and also imposed a cost of Rs 75,000 on the petitioner.
The court added, "We have said at times personal interest has to be subordinate to national interest. But that is the Chief Minister's personal call. We are no one to advise him."
The bench observed that "Petitioner’s claim of being representative of people of India is nothing but a fancy play devoid of any basis."
Aam Aadmi Party chief was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21, in money laundering case linked to the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy.
Kejriwal is in judicial custody till April 23.
