Delhi's Karkardooma court on Tuesday rejected the bail plea filed by former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) scholar Umar Khalid in relation to 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case.

Additional sessions judge Sameer Bajpai dismissed Khalid's plea.

Umar Khalid has been in jail since September 2020 in a UAPA case. Khalid had sought regular bail in the case on the grounds of delay and parity with other accused.

Earlier Khalid's counsel Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal on February 14 withdrew the bail plea of Khalid in Supreme Court when the matter was slated to be heard by a bench of Justices Bela M Trivedi and Pankaj Mithal.

"We wish to withdraw due to change of circumstances and move the trial court for appropriate relief," Sibal had said, quoted Bar and Bench.

On May 13, special judge Bajpai had reserved the order on his bail application.

The Delhi police have accused Umar Khalid of planning protests in 2020 at 23 places, which allegedly led to riots. Khalid’s bail plea before the apex court have been adjourned 14 times.
