A Sealdah court in Kolkata has convicted Sanjay Roy, a 33-year-old civic volunteer, in the rape and murder of a trainee doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The heinous crime had sparked widespread outrage across West Bengal, leading to state-wide protests. Junior doctors staged hunger strikes demanding systemic reforms in the state’s healthcare sector to prevent such incidents in the future.

After the verdict was announced, Roy reportedly shouted accusations involving an “IPS officer” and alleged that the actual perpetrators had been allowed to walk free. He had previously claimed that he was being framed for the crime.

The additional district and sessions court found Roy guilty under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, covering offenses of rape, murder, and causing death.

The sentencing is scheduled for Monday, January 20.

The case has intensified calls for stricter punishment, with demands for the death penalty gaining momentum.

The Mamata Banerjee government, amid criticism over law and order in the aftermath of the incident, had introduced a new law advocating capital punishment for all cases of rape.
