Former Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) MP from Kaiserganj, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has petitioned the Delhi High Court to have the criminal proceedings against him, related to accusations of sexual harassment by women wrestlers, dismissed.

Singh, ex-chief of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), has requested the quashing of both the FIR and the charges framed against him, news agency PTI reported.

Singh contends that he has been falsely implicated and that the investigation has been biased. He alleges that the complainants are motivated by revenge. His petition is scheduled for a hearing on Thursday, August 29.

Six women wrestlers have accused Singh of sexual harassment, which he denies. The trial began last month, and in May, charges were framed against Singh under IPC sections 354 (assault or criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 354A (sexual harassment), concerning five complainants. Additionally, charges for criminal intimidation were considered for allegations made by two other complainants.

The Delhi Police filed their chargesheet in June 2023, following Supreme Court intervention and protests by prominent wrestlers Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia, and Vinesh Phogat in Delhi. Singh resigned as WFI chief following the allegations, and Sanjay Singh, a close associate of Singh, was elected as his successor in late 2023. However, the Union sports ministry subsequently suspended the WFI.

A minor wrestler had also accused Singh, but her complaint was withdrawn amid reports of pressure on her family to retract the allegations.
