A Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court in Beed on Monday (January 27) remanded Sudarshan Ghule, an accused in the murder of Massajog sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh, to CID custody until January 31.
The court granted this to allow further investigation into digital data and seized mobile phones, new agency PTI reported.
Ghule, who had earlier been placed in judicial custody on January 18, was presented before the MCOCA court for further proceedings.
The case revolves around the abduction, torture, and murder of sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh on December 9. Deshmukh had allegedly opposed an extortion attempt targeting an energy firm in Beed district.
The police have registered cases of murder and extortion, and so far, seven people have been arrested in connection with the murder. Among those detained in the extortion case is Walmik Karad, reportedly a close associate of Maharashtra minister Dhananjay Munde.
The state government pleader stated that invoking the stringent MCOCA against Ghule would aid in further investigation.
“The stringent MCOCA was invoked against Ghule for further investigation. Police want to investigate digital data recovered in the crime. Police also want to check his mobile phone but it’s locked by a password,” the pleader said, reported PTI.
Ghule's lawyer argued that the police already had possession of the mobile phones and questioned the need for additional custody.
“The prosecution demanded a ten-day custody for Ghule but the court gave CID five days. The police want to inquire about digital evidence and mobile phone passwords even though phones were seized earlier,” the lawyer said.
