A court in Thalassery, Kerala, on Tuesday (January 7) sentenced nine Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) workers to life imprisonment for the murder of Rijith Sankaran, a 25-year-old CPI(M) member, nearly two decades ago, news agency PTI reported.
The incident occurred on October 3, 2005, during a period of heightened political tensions between the RSS and CPI(M) in the Kannapuram Chunda area of north Kerala.
Rijith was ambushed and attacked near a temple in Chunda while walking home with friends. Armed with weapons, the accused launched a brutal assault, killing Rijith and injuring three of his companions.
On January 4, the Additional District Sessions Court in Thalassery convicted nine of the ten accused in the case, with one of the accused having died in a road accident during the trial.
The convicted individuals—Sudhakaran (57), Jayesh (41), Ranjith (44), Ajeendran (51), Anilkumar (52), Rajesh (46), Sreekanth (47), his brother Sreejith (43), and Bhaskaran (67)—were found guilty under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. These included murder, attempted murder, unlawful assembly, rioting, wrongful restraint, and voluntarily causing hurt with weapons.
The verdict brings closure to a 19-year legal battle.
