Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus will head Bangladesh’s interim government, a press release from the president’s office said, The Daily Star reported.

The decision was made during an important meeting chaired by Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin, the day after Sheikh Hasina resigned from her position as Prime Minister and left the country, following weeks of intense violence across the country, which resulted in approximately 300 deaths and thousands of injuries.

The interim government is expected to organize elections shortly after assuming power. According to a spokesperson, Yunus is expected to arrive in Dhaka on Thursday following a medical procedure in Paris.

Earlier on Tuesday, Shahabuddin dissolved the parliament that was elected on January 7 this year, with Hasina leading at the time.

“The decision to dissolve the parliament was taken following the president’s discussions with chiefs of three staffs of armed forces, leaders of different political parties, representatives of civil society and leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement,” the press release from the president’s office said.

Meanwhile, after resigning as prime minister, Hasina arrived in India on a military aircraft. Although she is reportedly seeking asylum in the UK, her stay in India may extend beyond the original plan, as the UK requires asylum seekers to be physically present within its territory.

Yunus who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for his pioneering efforts to alleviate poverty, has faced charges in over 190 cases brought against him by the Hasina government.

His founding of Grameen Bank, a microfinance institution, provided small loans to Bangladesh’s rural poor, significantly contributing to the country's economic growth.

Muhammad Yunus was born in 1940 in Chittagong. He studied at Dhaka University before pursuing a degree in economics at Vanderbilt University in the United States. After earning his PhD, Yunus served as an assistant professor at Middle Tennessee State University before returning to Bangladesh.
