Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan currently incarcerated, has applied for the position of Chancellor at the University of Oxford, according to his political party.
Khan, who led Pakistan as PM from 2018 to 2022, is now marking one year in prison. He faces a range of allegations, from corruption to inciting violence, which he claims are politically motivated attempts to prevent his return to power.
On Sunday (August 18), Imran Khan submitted his application to become Chancellor of the University of Oxford, where he played cricket and is an alumnus of Keble College. The Oxford-educated Khan will be campaigning for the chancellorship from his prison cell via an online ballot.
"Imran Khan had given instructions that he would like to submit his application and now the application scrutiny will take place," Sayed Zulfikar Bukhari, the London-based spokesman for Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, told AFP.
"It's a ceremonial post but one with utmost prestige and importance and Imran Khan, being one of the larger or more popular names coming out of Oxford, it would be brilliant to see him as chancellor," he said.
Khan, who studied Economics and Politics at Keble College in 1972, has been imprisoned since August 2023. At 71, he is serving multiple sentences, with the longest currently totalling nine years.
Imran Khan is also celebrated as Pakistan’s greatest cricketer and is considered one of the finest all-rounders in the sport's history.
