The leaders of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) have urged the interim government to announce the date for the national election by January 15, stressing that reforms should go beyond mere rhetoric and include substantial discussions with political parties and other stakeholders.

The appeal was made during a rally organized by the CPB at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka on Friday (January 3) afternoon.

Addressing the crowd, CPB President Mohammad Shah Alam called on the interim government to outline a clear roadmap for the upcoming general elections to ensure the country's democratic transition.

“Take special initiatives to resolve the crises in public life and ensure safety for life and property. Announce a specific date for the national parliamentary election. Reforms should go beyond word choices, requiring concrete steps through discussions with political parties and others,” Dhaka Tribune quoted Alam as saying.

He urged the interim government to take special initiatives to resolve the crises affecting public life and ensure the safety of citizens and their property. He also warned against the rising influence of autocratic forces, accusing India of attempting to dominate Bangladesh by installing its allies in power.

“The interim government has yet to address the market system. We must remain vigilant against the forces of fallen autocracy. India wants to dominate Bangladesh and seeks to install their allies in power. Leftist parties must unite to protect the country and drive it forward,” he added.

The CPB president reminded the government to govern in accordance with the ideals of the 1971 liberation war, warning that the people would not accept anything less.

Former CPB President Mujahidul Islam Selim noted that after the fall of the fascist Sheikh Hasina government, the people were eagerly awaiting a democratic transition and the restoration of their political rights. He proposed the formation of a united front consisting of leftist and democratic parties to contest the next general elections together.

CPB General Secretary Ruhin Hossain Prince expressed frustration over the interim government's failure to provide a clear roadmap for the elections. He also criticized the government for not controlling the soaring prices of essential commodities, which have severely impacted the livelihoods of ordinary citizens.

Other leaders, including Mihir Ghosh, assistant general secretary of the party, Kazi Sajjad Zahir Chandan, presidium member, and Sujan Bhawmik, son of Khetmajur leader Pradip Bhawmaik, who was killed during the July uprising, also spoke at the rally.

The CPB announced new initiatives at the event, including holding discussions with various political parties from January 10 to form a broader alliance, observing Paltan Killing Day on January 20, and organizing a nationwide democratic march from January 21 to 27.

The rally concluded with a red-flag procession that marched through the city's streets, drawing thousands of party members and supporters from across the country.
