Tensions across West Asia escalated sharply on Sunday morning as Iran launched a new round of missile and drone strikes targeting Israel and US military installations in the region.

Explosions were reported in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates on March 1, as the conflict widened beyond the immediate Israel-Iran theatre.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced that it had launched a “sixth wave” of missile and drone attacks aimed at Israeli territory and American bases. The fresh offensive followed Saturday’s joint Israeli-US strikes on Iran, which included air raids that, according to Iranian authorities, resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Confirmation of Khamenei’s passing came from Tehran on Sunday morning.

The February 28 assault on Iran had begun with airstrikes in Tehran, Isfahan, Qom, Karaj and Kermanshah, marking one of the most extensive attacks on Iranian soil in recent years.

In a statement issued earlier on Sunday, the Iranian embassy in India said that in the “fifth wave of Operation True Promise 4 in the Indian Ocean, the MSP ship, which was carrying ammunition for American vessels, was hit by four drones at the Jebel Ali anchorage and was completely disabled with damage and explosions.”

Jebel Ali, located in Dubai, is one of the UAE’s largest commercial ports.

International media outlets reported damage in parts of Dubai, including the Dubai International Airport, the iconic Burj Al Arab hotel and the Palm Jumeirah island. The Iranian consulate also claimed that a US naval base in Kuwait’s Abdullah Mubarak area had been struck.

According to CNN, smoke was seen rising from the Crown Plaza hotel in Manama, Bahrain, prompting authorities to activate emergency sirens across the country. In Doha, Qatar, explosions were reported, and the interior ministry stated that 16 people had been injured, with “limited material damage” in some areas.

Amid fears of further escalation, the US embassy in Jordan issued a security alert advising residents to seek immediate shelter.

“Reports indicate missiles, drones, or rockets are in Jordanian airspace. Seek overhead cover and shelter in place immediately,” the advisory said, urging people to “remain indoors and pay attention to local announcements and alerts.”

With multiple countries now reporting strikes and casualties, the unfolding situation signals a dramatic expansion of hostilities in the region, raising concerns of a broader regional conflict.
