A fresh phase of collaboration among India, Australia and Canada is set to unfold with the launch of a new trilateral initiative centred on advanced technology and strategic resources.

The three nations have unveiled the Australia Canada India Technology and Innovation Partnership (ACITI), designed to boost cooperation in green energy, artificial intelligence and critical minerals.

The announcement was made following talks on the sidelines of the G20 summit in South Africa, where India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with his Australian and Canadian counterparts, Anthony Albanese and Mark Carney.

According to a joint communiqué, “The initiative will draw on the natural strengths of the three countries and have an emphasis on green energy innovation and building resilient supply chains, including in critical minerals.”

The three governments highlighted that a major goal of the cooperation would be to accelerate progress toward net-zero emissions while ensuring secure and diversified supply chains for industries of the future. Critical minerals — essential for batteries, renewable technologies and advanced manufacturing — are set to remain central to the partnership.

As outlined in the statement, “The partnership will also examine the development and mass adoption of artificial intelligence to improve the lives of our citizens.”

This development comes as New Delhi and Ottawa seek to restore normal diplomatic engagement after a prolonged period of tension triggered by allegations from Canada regarding the killing of one of its citizens. Modi and Carney have now met twice this year, reflecting attempts to put relations back on a constructive track.

Officials from the three nations will convene in early 2026 to carry the initiative forward. India has also invited the Canadian prime minister to the AI summit next year, an invitation extended during Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand’s visit to New Delhi in October.

Separately, Australian Prime Minister Albanese told the media he was “hopeful there will be a meeting in the first quarter of next year” in India of the Quad grouping, which includes the United States and Japan alongside India and Australia.

India had planned to host the summit in 2025 and Modi had invited Donald Trump earlier this year in Washington, though the United States has yet to indicate whether the Trump administration will prioritise the Quad forum going forward.
