Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States on Monday, January 20, marking the start of his second term.

Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath of office during a ceremony held indoors at the Capitol in Washington, D.C., due to freezing temperatures. Moments earlier, Vice President J.D. Vance, Trump’s running mate, took his oath administered by Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

In his inaugural address, Trump proclaimed, “The golden age of America begins right now. From this day forward our country will flourish and be respected again all over the world. We will be the envy of every nation and we will not allow ourselves to be taken advantage of any longer. During every single day of the Trump administration, I will very simply put America first.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Trump later that evening, expressing optimism about working together again to strengthen ties between India and the United States.

Modi and Trump had previously shared warm relations during Trump’s first term, highlighted by joint appearances at events like “Howdy, Modi!” in Houston and “Namaste Trump” in Ahmedabad. Modi was also among the first world leaders to call Trump after his election victory last year.

Trump’s inaugural ceremony, typically held outdoors, moved indoors due to the day’s high temperature of -2 degrees Celsius.

The event was attended by notable figures, including former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama, as well as prominent tech CEOs like Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Sundar Pichai, and Mark Zuckerberg. Foreign dignitaries, such as Argentine President Javier Milei and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, made history as the first foreign leaders to attend a US presidential inauguration.

During his speech, Trump announced plans to declare a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border and deploy troops to strengthen border security. He also vowed to deport millions of undocumented immigrants and proposed renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.”

Additionally, he pledged to reclaim the Panama Canal, signalling a robust approach to U.S. sovereignty.

Trump arrived at the Capitol alongside outgoing President Joe Biden in the presidential limousine. This marked a departure from their prior history, as Trump had skipped Biden’s inauguration four years ago amid ongoing disputes over the 2020 election results.

Before leaving office, Biden issued pardons for several prominent figures, including Dr. Anthony Fauci, retired General Mark Milley, and members of the House committee that investigated the January 6 Capitol attack.

In a statement, Biden defended the pardons, stating these individuals were unjustly targeted by politically motivated prosecutions.

Trump’s inauguration sets the tone for what he described as a transformative era in American politics, with bold domestic and foreign policy goals outlined on day one of his second presidency.
