Early Saturday (October 26), Israel carried out military airstrikes targeting Iranian sites, framing the action as a response to recent missile attacks from Tehran. The development marks a significant escalation in the ongoing tensions between the two heavily armed nations.
In a statement on X, Israel's top military spokesman announced that the mission against Iran had been completed.
"I can now confirm that we have concluded the Israeli response to Iran’s attacks against Israel. We conducted targeted and precise strikes on military targets in Iran — thwarting immediate threats to the State of Israel,” said IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari in a video address.
The Islamic Republic of Iran had launched missile strikes on Israel on October 1-2.
Al Jazeera reported that Iran's military stated the Israeli strikes on military bases in Ilam, Khuzestan, and Tehran provinces resulted in "limited damage."
Meanwhile, a spokesman for the U.S. National Security Council acknowledged that Washington was aware of the Israeli strikes, characterizing them as an "exercise in self defence," although the U.S. did not participate in the operations.
