In a recent attack on Monday (August 26), in south-west Pakistan, at least 22 people have been killed by gunmen who forced them out of their vehicles and examined their identities, the officials said.

The incident occurred overnight on a highway in Balochistan province, an area where security forces are engaged in conflicts involving sectarian, ethnic, and separatist violence.

The attackers reportedly targeted individuals from Punjab, separating them from others before shooting them and then setting the vehicles on fire. The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), a militant organization, has claimed responsibility for the assault in the Musa Khel district.

"The numbers of the militants were between 30 to 40. They stopped 22 vehicles," said Najibullah Kakar, a senior local official, told AFP news agency.

According to Reuters, the (BLA has claimed that their attack was aimed at military personnel disguised in civilian clothing. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed "deep grief and condemnation over the terrorist attack" through a statement from his office.

Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest province, remains the least developed despite its abundant resources. The BLA and other Baloch separatist groups have increasingly targeted Punjabis and Sindhis from other parts of Pakistan working in the region, as well as foreign energy companies they accuse of exploiting local resources without equitable profit-sharing.

In a similar incident earlier this year, nine passengers were killed after being removed from a bus in Balochistan and shot following identity checks.

Over the past 24 hours, the BLA has conducted a series of attacks on various government installations, including police stations and security force camps throughout the province. Several Western nations, including the UK and US, have labeled the BLA as a global terrorist organization.
