Authorities have confirmed that four people were killed and nine others injured in a shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, on Wednesday (September 4) morning.
Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Chris Hosey reported that the victims include two students—Mason Schermerhorn, 14, and Christian Angulo, 14—and two teachers—Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Christina Irimie, 53. Both Aspinwall and Irimie were math teachers at the school, The Associated Press reported.
The suspect, 14-year-old Colt Gray, a student at Apalachee High School, has been taken into custody. Hosey stated that Gray will face charges of murder and will be tried as an adult.
All nine hospitalized individuals had gunshot wounds but are expected to survive. Gray surrendered when confronted by law enforcement and has been cooperating with the investigation. He is being held at the Barrow County Detention Center.
Hosey noted that Gray used an AR platform-style firearm, and there is no evidence suggesting any additional shooters were involved. Authorities are still working to clarify the timeline of events from Gray's arrival at school to the shooting.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Atlanta reported that the suspect had been interviewed by county authorities last year in connection with online threats to commit a school shooting. The FBI’s National Threat Operations Center identified the posts as originating from Georgia, leading to a referral to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office.
During that investigation, the then-13-year-old Gray and his father were questioned. Gray denied responsibility for the threats, and his father stated that while there were hunting guns in the home, Gray did not have unsupervised access to them. Jackson County authorities had alerted local schools to monitor Gray, but there was no probable cause for further law enforcement action at that time, according to the FBI.
