A deep depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall across several districts of Odisha, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday (May 29).

According to the IMD bulletin, a well-marked low-pressure system intensified into a deep depression, moving northward at a speed of 20 kmph over the past three hours.

The system is currently positioned about 60 km southeast of Sagar Island, 110 km east-southeast of Digha, and 260 km east of Balasore.

“The depression over Northwest Bay of Bengal off West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts moved nearly northwards with a speed of 20 kmph during past 3 hours, intensified into a deep depression and lay centred at 0830 hours IST of today, the 29th May 2025 over the same region near latitude 21.3° N and longitude 88.5° E, about 60 km southeast of Sagar Island, 110 km east-southeast of Digha, 260 km east of Balasore, 180 km south-southwest of Mongla (Bangladesh) and 180 km west of Khepupara (Bangladesh),” the IMD statement said.

The depression is forecast to continue moving north and is likely to make landfall along the West Bengal–Bangladesh coasts, between Sagar Island and Khepupara in Bangladesh, by Thursday afternoon.

In light of the developing weather system, the IMD has issued an Orange Warning — advising preparedness — for the districts of Ganjam, Gajapati, Koraput, Rayagada, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Nawarangpur, Kalahandi, Mayurbhanj, and Jagatsinghpur.

A Yellow Warning — urging caution — has also been issued for Kandhamal, Puri, Nayagarh, Khurdha, Cuttack, Nuapada, Bolangir, Keonjhar, and Jajpur, warning of thunderstorms with lightning and heavy rainfall.

Similar warnings have been extended to Dhenkanal, Sonepur, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Angul, Deogarh, Boudh, Bargarh, and Malkangiri.

Authorities have urged residents in affected areas to stay alert and take necessary precautions as the weather system progresses.
