Heavy rains and a cloudburst late Monday (September 15) night triggered devastating landslides and flash floods across Dehradun district in Uttarakhand, resulting in at least ten deaths and leaving around eight people missing, according to The New Indian Express.
The calamity, centred in Sahastradhara, struck in the early hours of Tuesday, unleashing torrential rain and widespread destruction.
Flash floods swept away hotels, shops, and houses, causing extensive damage to commercial establishments and vital infrastructure, while many are feared trapped or swept away in the raging waters.
Disaster Management Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman reported that damage was also reported from Mal Devta in Dehradun and from Mussoorie.
The heavy overnight rains across Uttarakhand led to damaged roads, washed-out bridges, and the collapse of houses and shops, as well as triggering multiple landslides.
A red alert was issued early Tuesday morning by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Dehradun, and the Disaster Alert Portal of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). The areas hardest hit include Tapkeshwar, DIT College area, Rajpur Shikhar Falls, and Bhagat Singh Colony.
Rescue efforts are being carried out by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and the Public Works Department (PWD).
The SDRF is attempting to rescue over 100 people stranded in various parts of the city, while approximately 30 remain trapped in Panchkuli, Raipur. More than 500 people are being evacuated to safer locations, including the Shri Dev Bhoomi Institute in Premnagar. Schools across Dehradun district have been ordered to remain closed as a precaution.
The red alert, issued at 5 am, warned residents of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunder accompanied by lightning, and spells of intense to extremely intense rain.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah assured Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami of the Union government’s full support.
“They assured the state of all possible assistance and said the Centre stands firmly with Uttarakhand in this hour of disaster,” the state government said, as reported by The Indian Express.
