New Delhi and its adjoining areas experienced a mild earthquake of 4.0 magnitude early Monday (February 17) morning, with tremors felt across the national capital region.
The epicentre was identified in the Jheel Park area of Dhaula Kuan, according to news agency PTI.
The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported that the quake struck at 5:36 AM at a depth of five kilometres. While no casualties or significant damage were reported, some residents claimed to have heard a loud sound as the tremors shook the ground.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the incident on X, urged citizens to stay calm, follow safety precautions, and remain alert for possible aftershocks.
“Tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby areas. Urging everyone to stay calm and follow safety precautions, staying alert for possible aftershocks. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation,” PM wrote.
Former Delhi Chief Ministers Arvind Kejriwal and Atishi also acknowledged the event on social media.
